Charism

The charism of the Sisters of the Precious Blood is to proclaim and live the redeeming love of Christ’s Precious Blood through reconciliation, healing, and life‑giving service. Rooted in Eucharistic spirituality and the contemplative‑missionary tradition of prayer and work (ora et labora), the sisters strive to be a reconciling presence in a fractured world, reaching out to the poor, the marginalized, and all those in need of Christ’s compassion. They seek to embody Christ’s redeeming love in education, healthcare, pastoral care, advocacy for justice, and social outreach.

Short History

The Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood were founded in 1885 by Abbot Francis Pfanner, a Trappist monk whose vision was to involve women in active missionary service that combined prayerful contemplation with practical outreach. Beginning in Mariannhill, South Africa, the sisters’ presence expanded to serve in varied contexts where human need and the call to proclaim the Gospel were greatest. Over almost 140 years, the congregation has grown internationally, with communities in Africa, Europe, and elsewhere, continuing their founder’s mission of reverence for the Precious Blood of Christ and service to those on the margins.
