To live and proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ as missionary disciples, especially among the poor, oppressed, and marginalized in the world, through pastoral ministry, evangelization, community service, and solidarity with local churches across cultures and continents.

Short History

The Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers were founded in 1911 in New York, USA, as the first Catholic foreign mission society established in the United States. They were formed by Fr. Thomas Frederick Price and Fr. James Anthony Walsh in response to Pope Pius X’s encouragement that American Catholics participate in global mission work. Named after “Mary’s Knoll,” the hill in Ossining, New York where their headquarters were built, the society trained and sent priests and brothers to serve in countries across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and beyond.
Over the decades Maryknoll missioners became known for immersion in local cultures, promoting faith and development among the poorest and most excluded communities. Today they continue to serve in dozens of countries worldwide, engaging in pastoral care, social justice initiatives, education, health care, and advocacy while encouraging missionary discipleship in the Church.
